A Broker of Both

GEICO or Progressive for your teen driver?
I represent both. Here is the honest answer.

Every ranking article crowns a winner from state averages, and your kid is not an average. I hold appointments with both companies, so this page has no side to sell. Two toolkits, each in its own words, cards face up, and the quote decides.

The answer

Neither, universally, and I say that as a broker of both, Progressive since this agency opened in 2020, GEICO since September 2024, with both appointments current in Texas Department of Insurance records. The two price teen households differently family by family, their toolkits reward different things, and the only honest answer is to quote both, every lever pulled. Cards face up below. The decision stays yours.

Two Pens, One Desk

Stop wondering who is better. We find out, for your family.

One conversation starts both quotes, every lever pulled, and the answer comes back in numbers you can hold side by side.

You wanted a winner. I understand.

Adding a teen driver is expensive enough that a clear winner would be a mercy, and the internet is happy to supply one. Those ranking articles are not lying to you. They are averaging, across states, vehicles, records, and ZIP codes, and averages are exactly what your household is not.

A sixteen-year-old's quote swings on the car they are assigned to, the street they sleep on, the grades on the refrigerator, and the household's own record, more than it swings on the logo. Which is why the same two companies trade places family to family, and why I stopped predicting and started quoting both. That is the quiet gift of a desk that shops both. You never have to worry about who is better. You get to find out who is better for your family.

The two toolkits, each in its own words.

GEICO's toolkit

A good student discount its own pages put at as much as 15 percent for a B average or better, varying by state. A driver's education discount with an unpublished amount. And DriveEasy, the app that scores the driving.

Progressive's toolkit

A good student discount its own pages say starts at 5 percent in most states, for full-time students under 23 on a parent's policy. A teen driver discount at eighteen or younger. And a distant student discount when college takes them 100 miles or more from home without the car.

Where they meet

Both reward grades. Both run telematics. Both confirm every number at quote rather than in marketing. And both publish their honest caveats, if you read far enough down the page. I read that far for a living.

Now notice the framing, because it is the most useful thing on this page. GEICO publishes a ceiling, as much as 15 percent. Progressive publishes a floor, starts at 5 percent. Neither number is your number, and comparing a ceiling to a floor is how careful families get misled by accurate information.

The apps, and what each company admits.

Telematics is where a teen comparison gets real, because both programs put a grader in a brand-new driver's pocket. GEICO's own help center says DriveEasy logs braking, distance, and phone use, and that the score gets factored into your rate. Progressive's own Snapshot page says it just as plainly, your rate may increase with high-risk driving.

I respect both companies for printing the honest sentence. What I tell families at this desk is the same for either logo. A careful teen can genuinely help the household, a rough first year can show up in the price, and the enrollment decision belongs at your kitchen table before it belongs on any quote. We make that call as a family, then we shop both.

My cards, face up

Appointed with GEICO. Appointed with Progressive.

Progressive has been on this shelf since the day McDade opened in 2020, four years before GEICO's letter ever arrived. GEICO joined in September 2024, when this desk was appointed among the first handful of independent agencies in the country. Both appointments are current in our Texas Department of Insurance licensing records, searchable by anyone under McDade. Each company pays me the same way, by commission when a policy lands, and you pay no broker fees for personal lines. I have no thumb to put on this scale, which is exactly why I can hold it.

That is the whole reason a page like this can exist. A captive desk has to win the argument. A desk that shops both only has to run the quote.

How a family actually decides.

Here is the sitting, the way it runs at this desk. We pull the levers first, the report card, the driver's ed certificate, the telematics decision made with eyes open, the vehicle assignment chosen on purpose. Then GEICO and Progressive get quoted side by side for your actual household, not the state average's, and the rest of the 50+ top Texas carriers we know well line up beside them, because a new driver rewards the full comparison like nothing else in this business.

And whichever pen wins, we translate the contract before claim time, with the liability limits protecting a brand-new driver chosen instead of defaulted. The logo on the card matters far less than the limits behind it.

When you represent both sides, the only brand left to protect is the family across the desk. So that is the brand I protect.

Sources worth opening before you decide.

Two per side, so nobody has to take my word for any of it. On the GEICO side, GEICO's own guidance for parents, which carries the good student figure, and GEICO's DriveEasy help center, which explains the score and the rate. On the Progressive side, Progressive's own student discounts page, which carries the starts-at figure and the eligibility, and Progressive's Snapshot page, which prints the high-risk driving sentence in the company's own words.

Our appointments with both companies are on record with the Texas Department of Insurance. The analysis, the ceiling-and-floor reading, and the Houston framing are mine. The purpose is to help your family ask better questions before claim time.

Asked across my desk, answered plainly.

So which one is actually cheaper for a teen driver?

Whichever one your household's specific profile lands better with, and I mean that literally. The same two companies trade places family to family on the vehicle, the ZIP code, the grades, and the record. I have watched each of them win the same street in the same month. The quote is the only ranking that includes your kid.

Does Progressive have a good student discount like GEICO's?

Yes, with different fine print. Progressive's own pages say it starts at 5 percent in most states for full-time students under 23 with a B average or better, on a parent's policy rather than their own. GEICO's pages frame theirs at as much as 15 percent, varying by state. A ceiling and a floor, and neither number is your number until a quote prints it.

Snapshot or DriveEasy for a brand-new driver?

Treat them as the same decision wearing two logos. Both score the driving, GEICO factors the DriveEasy score into the rate by its own description, and Progressive's own page says your rate may increase with high-risk driving. A careful teen can help the household with either. Make the call at your kitchen table first, with eyes open, then shop.

Can one desk really quote both companies fairly?

That is exactly what the appointments are for. Progressive has been on this desk since we opened in 2020, GEICO joined in September 2024, and both appointments are current in our Texas Department of Insurance records. Each pays the same commission structure when a policy lands, and there are no broker fees for personal lines. Fairness here is not a promise. It is the business model.

Will you just steer us to whichever pays you more?

No, and the numbers back the culture. About 40 percent of the time we tell clients to stay with their current carrier, and sometimes even with their current agent, because that is the right answer for the family. The same honesty runs this comparison, and it is why the decision on this page stays yours.

Bring me the permit and the report card.
Both companies can argue in numbers.

A licensed McDade broker quotes GEICO and Progressive side by side for your actual household, prices the rest of the 50+ top Texas carriers we know well beside them, and the decision stays yours.

The conversation is free. The decision is yours. No broker fees for personal lines clients.
