Can an Independent Agent Sell GEICO? Yes, Read the Letter

From the Founder's Desk

Can an independent agent sell GEICO? Yes. Our appointment letter is dated September 2024.

For most of my career the answer was no, and everyone in this industry knew it. Then a letter arrived at my office in Spring that changed the answer, and I have been explaining it across this desk ever since. Here is the whole story, receipts included.

The answer

Yes. Since September 2024, McDade Insurance has held a GEICO appointment, among the first handful of independent agencies in the country, writing GEICO auto, motorcycle, and commercial. The letter is dated September 3, 2024, the appointment sits in Texas Department of Insurance public records, and you are welcome to look both up before you believe me.

You were told no for ninety years. So was I.

I came up in this business under the same rule you learned from the commercials. GEICO does not use agents. It was in the training, in the trade coverage, in the way every quote conversation started. The company built itself on skipping people like me, and it worked brilliantly for almost ninety years.

So when someone tells you an independent desk in Spring, Texas writes GEICO, your squint is earned. I have read the old rule printed as current fact in trade coverage as recently as this spring. The people repeating it are not careless. They are remembering accurately. The world just changed quietly, and I happened to be standing at the door when it did.

What arrived on September 3, 2024

GEICO For Your Agency. Provisional appointment approved.

The licensing email came through our Premier Group Insurance connection on August 27. The approval followed a week later, and I keep it close because it explains everything on this site's GEICO shelf. But you do not have to take a framed letter's word for anything. The appointment sits in the Texas Department of Insurance public license lookup under our agency, dated to the same day. Check me. I mean it.

The welcome letter that followed, confetti instructions included.

The welcome letter told us to fire off the confetti, blast the trumpets, and dance a jig, their words, and this desk obliged. How does an independent desk end up holding that letter at all? Not by asking. GEICO's own agency page says it plainly, the channel is invitation only, and only invited agency principals can apply. A small first wave of invitations went out across Texas in 2024, one of them found this desk, and I said yes before the ink settled.

What the appointment actually opened.

Three lines at one desk. GEICO auto, GEICO motorcycle, and GEICO commercial, with current Texas availability confirmed on every quote. Personal lines opened for us on September 3, and commercial followed before that month was out, which matters more than it sounds. The car, the bike, and the work truck finally get considered as one household instead of three phone calls.

And because I know the next question, no, nothing about GEICO's pricing machinery changes when the quote runs here. The rates are GEICO's Texas filings, the discounts live in those filings too, and the conversation is free, with no broker fees for personal lines. What changes is the company GEICO keeps on my shelf, and the homework that happens before any number prints.

The discount tour I give at the kitchen table.

The most useful thing I have learned since the letter arrived is how many doors GEICO holds open that nobody walks families through. Five stops, the way I give the tour across this desk.

  1. The Eagle

Federal employment itself is a door, active or retired, straight from GEICO's own federal page. The company was founded for these households, and it never forgot.

  2. The Teachers

Educators enter through membership, organizations and alumni associations, not the school badge. Most teachers walk right past their own door, which is why it got its own page on this site.

  3. The Five Hundred Doors

Hundreds of partner organizations sit on GEICO's membership page, more than five hundred by common count, professional groups, honor societies, alumni networks. Your household almost certainly holds one.

  4. The Collector's Item

My favorite piece of trivia on the shelf. Berkshire Hathaway shareholders hold a door of their own, the parent company quietly tipping its hat to its owners.

  5. The One-Discount Rule

GEICO generally applies one group discount per policy, its own page says so, which means the doors do not stack. Choosing the single largest one is the whole game, and that choice is homework I do with you.

What the letter did not change.

GEICO joined my shelf the way every carrier joined it, by being the right answer for some of the families we serve. So it gets quoted here for two reasons only. A client asks for it by name, or it wins the comparison across the 50+ top Texas carriers we know well. Same time on the phone, more options, tailored to you and your values.

And whichever name ends up on your policy, we translate the contract before claim time, because a famous logo on the wrong coverage is still the wrong coverage. That part of this desk predates the letter by years, and it will outlast every letter I ever frame.

The industry kept printing what it believed. I decided this desk would print what it can prove.

Sources worth opening before you decide.

This article uses public source material from GEICO's own agency page, which describes the invitation-only channel in the company's words, from GEICO's membership discounts page, which carries the partner organizations and the one-discount rule, and from GEICO's federal employee discounts page, which holds the Eagle eligibility.

Our own appointment is on record with the Texas Department of Insurance, searchable by anyone under license 2539471, and the letter itself hangs where I can see it from this chair. The purpose of all of it is to help you ask better questions before claim time.

Asked across my desk, answered plainly.

Is the GEICO appointment real, and how do I check it?

As real as state records get. Our appointment with GEICO appears in the Texas Department of Insurance public license lookup dated September 3, 2024, matching the approval letter to the day. Search our agency name or license number 2539471 and read it yourself, no trust required.

Why would GEICO start using independent agencies now?

I can tell you what is documented and skip the boardroom guessing. GEICO's own agency page describes an invitation-only channel where only invited principals may apply, and a first wave of Texas invitations went out in 2024. Ours arrived through our Premier Group Insurance connection, and the letter did the rest.

Which GEICO lines can McDade actually write?

Auto, motorcycle, and commercial, with current Texas availability confirmed on every quote. Personal lines opened for us on September 3, 2024, and commercial followed before the month was out, so the car, the bike, and the work truck finally sit at one desk instead of three separate phone calls.

Do GEICO's discounts survive buying through McDade?

They do, because eligibility lives in GEICO's state filings, not in who runs the quote. What changes is that somebody does the homework. We walk every door your household holds, and since GEICO generally applies one group discount per policy, choosing the largest one is the whole game. The doors pages on this site exist for exactly that walk.

Now that the letter hangs on the wall, will GEICO always win at your desk?

No, and that is the entire point of an independent shelf. GEICO gets quoted when a client asks for it by name or when it wins the comparison. About 40 percent of the time we tell clients to stay with their current carrier, and sometimes even with their current agent, because that is the right answer for the family. The letter changed what we can offer. It did not change who we work for.

Bring me the question you are carrying. The letter answers for itself.

Your renewal, your affiliations, or nothing but healthy skepticism. A licensed McDade broker quotes GEICO beside the 50+ top Texas carriers we know well, and the decision stays yours.

The conversation is free. The decision is yours. No broker fees for personal lines clients.
